It is believed that it was saved by the blessings of Lord Murugan who resides in the Thiruchendur temple situated near the sea shores. Being the second important place of Lord Murugan’s abode, this place is famous around the world for its splendid crafted temples. The Thiruchendur temple is the largest and one of the most visited temples of this place as this temple is a part of the Lord Murugan’s Arupadaiveedu, i.e. one of the six temples dedicated to the battle camps of the Lord Murugan. Also known as Jayanthipuram in the historical epics, this temple's Sannathi Street is the longest of the all temples of the Tamil Nadu. It is one of the richest temples and is built by three holy saints. The Rajagopuram or the western tower is of 133 feet and just 200 meters near the sea is taken as mystery but demonstrates the magnanimous architectural knowledge of ancient Tamils. This temple is also famous for the different festivals like Vaikasi visakam festival, Avani annual festival and many other festivals celebrated throughout the year.

Also the Navtirupathis located near Tiruchendur are a must visit. Other temples worth a visit are Valli’s Cave; Sri Ponvandu Aiyanar temple placed n Udankudi, Sri Karkuvel Aiyanar temple, Thundigayi Vinayagarkovil, Aazhigudi Maradachan, Arulingu Suthil Andavas temple, Siva temple, Moovar Samathu, Nallur Thirunageshwaramudayar along with the Aramvalartha Nayagi Sivan temple, the Santhana Mariyamman temple, and many others.

Due to the numerous churches present in and around Tiruchendur, it is also named as ‘Chinna Jerusalem’. There are many churches located in this place like, Neivillai CSI Immanuel Church, St. Marks Church, St. John Cathedral, St. Thomas Church, Good Shepherd Church and so on.

There are some striking waterfalls located around Tiruchendur that attracts many local tourists. Situated 10 km from Tiruchendur, Aiyanar Sunai is a natural water spring. Some other waterfalls situated around this place are Pabanasam falls (95 km), Courtallam falls (110 km) and Thirparuppu falls (100 km).
